menAlive and the Archdiocese of Brisbane are excited to bring you ‘Blessing of the Bikes 2022’.

All are welcome to come and join us at St Stephen’s Cathedral on August 27 for a blessing from Bishop Tim Norton. Whether you are young or old, fit or unfit, weekend battler or elite professional, believer of non-believer, we would love to see you all for this year’s Blessing of the Bikes.

The Blessing will be followed by a casual Riverloop ride finishing at Orleigh Park Westend for breakfast and coffee.

Where: St Stephen’s Cathedral. 249 Elizabeth St, Brisbane City.

When: 7:00am on Saturday, 27th August, 2022.

Blessing of the Bikes is a tradition in many towns and cities of Europe and North America.

Cyclists of all faiths (or lack thereof) are welcome to come and join us with their bikes to receive a blessing from Bishop Tim as winter draws to a close and the Brisbane spring cycling season approaches. Included in the blessing will be the sprinkling of holy water on our bikes, a moment of silence to remember those cyclists lost in the past and lots of ringing of bells in celebration of the sport of cycling.

The Riverloop ride

After the blessing (10 – 15 minutes), those that are interested are welcome to join us for a Riverloop ride.

Full River Loop – 30km at 25 km/hr

After Bishop Tim’s blessing we leave the rear of the Cathedral and head towards the new cycle path on Edward St and ride south to the Botanic Gardens. We follow the path along the edge of the river to QUT and continue onto the Coronation cycleway all the way to St Lucia. We leave the cycleway at Sandford St and cycle towards UQ via Macquarie St.

At UQ we continue along the edge of the river on Sir William McGregor Dve until we turn left onto Upland Rd and join Hillside Tce along the edge of the St Lucia Golf Links. After turning left onto Indooroopilly Rd we turn right onto Lambert Rd. Stay on Lambert Rd to the end where we arrive at the Walter Taylor Bridge and cross the river from Indooroopilly to Chelmer.

At Chelmer, we turn left onto Rosebery Terrace, then join Queenscroft St and onto Hargreaves, Leybourne, and Nadine Sts until we arrive at Graceville Ave and eventually King Arthur Terrace. We ride past the Queensland Tennis Centre and turn left onto Mooney St, then through Paragon St Park to Stevens St which joins Feez St. A left turn takes us up Kadumba St and we wind our way through Yeronga via Anita St, Diane St and Ormadale Rd until we join the Brisbane Corso. After the pleasant sprint along the Corso we dig deep up the steep 15+% pinch of T.J. Doyle Memorial Dve (a.k.a Cemetery Hill) and gasping for breath we turn left onto Gladstone Rd.

Stay in the cycling lane along Gladstone Rd for some more climbing and turn left onto Dornoch Tce where we are at the highest point of the ride. After that, it’s all plain sailing down Dornoch Tce until we arrive in Westend and weave through Ganges, Hoogley and Orleigh Sts and arrive at Hill End Tce and the finish of the bike ride! Time for a coffee and some food!

Half River Loop – 15km at 20 km/hr

At UQ we continue along the edge of the river on Sir William McGregor Dve until we turn off at the Eleanor Schonell Bridge (Green Bridge) and cross the river to Dutton Park.

We stay in the cycling lane along Gladstone Rd for some climbing and turn left onto Dornoch Tce where we are at the highest point of the ride. After that, keep your hands on the brakes as we cycle down Dornoch Tce until we arrive in Westend and weave through Ganges, Hoogley and Orleigh Sts and arrive at Hill End Tce and the finish of the bike ride! The Direct Family Route – 7 km

After Bishop Tim’s blessing we leave the rear of the Cathedral and head  towards the new cycle path on Edward St and ride south to the Botanic Gardens. We follow the path along the edge of the river to QUT and continue onto the Coronation cycleway.

At Milton, we turn right and cycle across the river on the Go Between Bridge. Another right turn gets us onto Riverside Drive. Follow Riverside Drive to the very end and we arrive at Orleigh Park!

Ride leaders will be present for each group to provide directions and other assistance during the ride.

Please note that the ride is an informal, unsanctioned ride and individual riders are expected to understand the inherent risks in cycling and gain appropriate insurance in the case of accident. Bicycle Queensland membership offers bike riding insurance for those seeking coverage.
