The Australian Catholic Men’s Gathering 2020 is an initiative of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and its aim is to inspire and encourage men with a vision for personal discipleship, service and mission in the family, parish and the world. This national gathering will call together a diverse range of Catholic men, men’s groups, movements, societies and fellowships from around Australia. It comes at a time in our Church where there are many challenges. There is a need to recognise that it is important to gather now and talk as men of the Church, with the bishops, to ensure the Gospel message is alive in our homes, our parishes and our communities. The bishops are praying that this gathering will be a timely opportunity to bring life, renewal and hope for all Catholic men.
The theme for the gathering is ‘Brothers, what must we do?’ taken from Acts 2:37. The image of the storm on the Sea of Galilee has been used as the apostles come together as the storm ravages around them. The image speaks of the critical place and hour the Church is in and echoes the Gospel story of men of faith and unity as they face the challenges before them. There is hope and expectation, knowing that Jesus will soon be there to calm and tame the stormy waters!
This gathering is an opportunity for the Bishops, to invite the men of the Church, to join them in the bold missionary task of communicating the message of the Good News to Australia. For those who are able to attend, they will be sent at the end of the day to return to their families, parishes and communities, to continue to be active witnesses to the Gospel. It will be a day anchored in prayer and focused on where our Church is, identifying the challenges and looking ahead to what our church could be and should be.
